What could be causing my severe lower back pain?

Question by Zach: What could be causing my severe lower back pain?
I'm a 20 year old male. My lower back hurts nearly all the time. It started about three months ago. Trying to stretch it also hurts and can almost be excrutiating at times. The pain also sometimes goes into my hips and upper legs. After getting an X-ray, my physical therapist said it's just growing pains from one of my bottom vertibrate being raised like five degrees on one side. The pain has gotten worse sense then. Could it really just be growing pains causing this sometimes severe lower back pain?

IF you have extreme abdominal muscles, it could be cauusing it

  1. You're pretty much done growing in that respect. What did the doctor who ordered the x-rays say? How about the radiologist's report? The physical therapist is there to help with stretches and other remedial actions, not diagnose or interpret. You might well be able to have the situation remedied by manipulation and other types of therapy.

  2. First question - how did it started? Was it sudden, cause of an injury? Or did it just grew gradually over the days?

Sounds like you have problems with your spine, but the reason for it might be many things: tight abdominal, leg, hip, back muscles; presence of excessive number of trigger points in the muscles; as i said before some type of injury, irregular muscle tonality etc.

If there was no injury, it probably is due to your muscles. What exactly - you have to think about it yourself. Which part hurts, what helps to relieve it, when does it hurt most/least? Listen to your body, listen to yourself. Even really strong pains can be healed with no medication and surgery and just with physical exercises.

One more thing, it might from something you do daily. Before the pain started, anytime from 12 to 2 months, maybe you moved houses, bought new mattress, changed your job?

Hope this helps. I've just started a blog(http://byebyebackpain.wordpress.com/) with posts how to help yourself, though it's more for a back pain occurring from muscle pain, so be careful if you do any exercises.

  3. The pain you are describing could be related to multiple conditions from a bulging disc, sciatica, a minor fracture, arthritis, an infection and beyond. I urge you to get a second opinion from a qualified medical practitioner. Turn to your GP for a referral to a chiropractor or physiotherapist. Bear in mind that not all instances of back pain are actually caused by a back condition. The article Back Pain and Nausea: When Back Pain is a Sign of a Different Problem discusses it at length.
